Do I Need to Detach the Disk from Its Server Before Expanding Its Capacity?

An expansion operation consists of two parts:
  1. Expand the disk capacity on the management console.
    • An In-use, shared disk cannot be expanded. Therefore, you must detach the shared disk from all its servers, and then expand its capacity.
    • An In-use, non-shared disk can be expanded, but you can leave the disk attached during expansion only when all the following conditions are met:
      • The disk's server is in the Running or Stopped state.
      • The disk's server OS meets certain requirements.
  2. Log in to the server and perform post-expansion operations, that is, allocate the additional space to the original partition or a new partition.
    • In a Windows OS: A detachment is not required whatever the post-expansion operation is performed.
    • In a Linux OS:
      • When allocating the additional space to the original partition, that is, recreate the partition, you must use the umount command to unmount the partition first and then perform post-expansion operations.
      • When allocating the additional space to a new partition, that is, create a new partition, you do not need to unmount the original partition.
